Probably the best meal I have had in DC. 11/10. Lentils and lamb are super delicious. Bring your friends! Bring your family!
Michelin-star-rated restaurant. We ordered a platter that they told us was for one person, but it served two quite well; we left full. Food was great, Ethiopian pop music a bit loud for our taste.

Incredibly warm and welcoming Ethiopian restaurant. Due to an unexpected flight cancellation, I found myself in DC with 24hrs to fill and so many places I wanted to try. Tsehay is situated on an incredibly charming street in a very lively neighbourhood (lots of local hangouts and a great indie bookstore just up the road). The food is, simply put, incredible. Tasty and warming - you can tell the owners really put the love into their cooking. I got the beef tib & shiro combo along with the gluten free injera (I was so thrilled to see they had gf options!). It came with a side salad that had this tasty mustard seed and vinegar dressing. The owner stopped by to check in and was so friendly. After talking a bit, he insisted on giving me a little sample of the Ye Bere Alicha (which was divine - the turmeric beef stew was the perfect thing for an overcast rainy day). When I find myself in DC, this will be one of the first places I come back to visit and I will be recommending any friends who are visiting the area to make the trip up to this delightful restaurant. It’s so hard to pick what my favorite Ethiopian joint in DC is, but this might be it!! So good.
This place is incredible! We got the meat and vegan platters. 10/10 tasty and great for a group. We got honeywine and coffees and strongly recommend everything.

I have visited and ordered take out over a handful of times and I enjoy their food but there are a lot of things to be taken into consideration: The portions are quite small compared to other Ethiopian restaurants in the area. For most dishes, they have a description of how many ounces it consist of, but every single time I ordered I got a different portion - not really sure what happens. That being said, once I requested some extra shiro and they did it, which was a really nice surprise. I think it’s always unclear how much Injera will come with the food, sometimes I’ve gotten a few rolls, other times a single one. For example, the lunch special clarifies its 4oz of meat but there is no further explanation of how many oz for the veg item and/or if it would come with Injera. I was still hungry after getting the special with shiro and beef, and think it would have been 10x better to get the Memo Special (shiro, beef, more injera and a salad) for an extra 2/3 dollars. On top of that, I found two small pieces of hair in my food (which was definitely not mine), I brushed it off and decided to eat the food anyways because I was in a hurry. I’d also be careful when ordering online as they have different pricing for different platforms. For example, the Memo Special is $22.99 on Toast and $29.90 on Storefront by DoorDash and GrubHub. All the staff I’ve met in person was always helpful, I usually go around lunch time and see the same waiter who is always kind. That being said, most replies I’ve seen to costumers here on Google Maps are extremely rude. It seems like they take all feedback as bad criticism, instead of trying to listen to their clients (people who are spending their money and want good quality service) and improve. Overall, it’s a 3 stars experience for me and there’s a lot of room for improvement! Read less
